Refugee-Specific Resources

These resources specifically focus on the medical needs of refugee communities, often by promoting and administering community-based health initiatives.

 

Refugee Health Program

This program does health screenings for refugees, special immigrant visa holders (SIVs) and asylees who move to Pierce County from other countries, states and counties. They work with healthcare providers to give immunizations, tests for HIV, STD and hepatitis B and C, emotional wellness, tuberculosis testing and treatment, stool testing, anemia and lead screening, physical exams, referrals for dental, vision, diabetes, high blood pressure and more. They provide Certification of Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record (form I-693) for adjustment of permanent status (Permanent Resident Card or “Green Card”). 

Afghan Health Initiative

The Afghan Health Initiative serves the immigrant and refugee population by promoting community-based public health interventions and increasing equal access to health, education, and economic independence. They have lead prevention and toxic prevention programs, health and wellness workshops, and COVID prevention/mitigation.

The Pierce County website has a list of free or low-cost medical clinics for local residents. The Tacoma – Pierce County Health Department also lists resources to help find affordable medical care.

 

Clinics provide free health or dental care to those who qualify. State, county, and local medical clinics and providers will provide free services, including dental and mental health. There are associations set up at the state level. Many of the locations are also federal government qualified locations. Locate federal qualified clinic associations.

Health care centers can help patients of all income levels, regardless of whether they have insurance coverage or not. Receive either free or low cost medical and dental care and other services such as prescription drugs. Note that more moderate income individuals may only need to pay what they can afford for their medical expenses. Community Health Care

Community Health Care is a network based in Tacoma. Community Health Care is a network based in Tacoma. They have medical clinic locations throughout Pierce County. These locations include Hilltop Regional Health Center, Eastside Medical Clinic, Lakewood Health Center, Parkland Medical Center, Spanaway Healthcare Center, and Key Medical Center. A health center in Puyallup is currently under construction.

 

Indigo Health

This network, part of the MultiCare system, offers online primary care. They accept the following Apple Health plans; Amerigroup, Community Health Plan of Washington, Coordinated Care, Molina Healthcare of Washington, and United Healthcare. Sea Mar Community Health Services

Sea Mar offers comprehensive health services in Western Washington. They specialize in primary care/family medicine services in Pierce County. Sea Mar offers primary and preventive care at their clinics in Lakewood, Puyallup, Spanaway, Tacoma (11th St and Cushman), and Tillicum. Sea Mar accepts most insurance plans, including Medicaid, and will provide services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. When insurance is not available, Sea Mar offers a sliding fee scale discount based on household size and income.

This network, which is part of the MultiCare system, has numerous urgent care clinics in Pierce County. These locations include; Bonney Lake, Frederickson, James Center (Tacoma), Orting, Point Ruston, Puyallup, and Uptown Gig Harbor. Use the link here to find locations near you.

Community Health Care

Community Health Care is a network based in Tacoma. They have medical/dental clinic locations throughout Pierce County. Location near you can be found here. The Hilltop Regional Health Center in Tacoma has an urgent care and pharmacy in addition to medical and dental clinics. 

 

MultiCare

This network offers a variety of clinics statewide which you can view at the link above. There are a couple associated hospitals in Pierce County that have children’s urgent care. These include; Mary Bridge Children’s Urgent Care (Gig Harbor), and Mary Bridge Children’s Urgent Care Puyallup (Meridian and Sunrise Blvd). They accept the following Apple Health plans; Amerigroup, Community Health Plan of Washington, Coordinated Care, Molina Healthcare of Washington, and United Healthcare. Emergency Care

The following resources will help you find an emergency room (ER) near you. If you need emergency medical care do not hesitate to have someone take you to an ER or call 911 to have an ambulance drive you to the ER. Dial 911 on your phone and describe your medical emergency in English or tell them you need a translator for Dari or Pashto. You do not need an appointment for an ER.

Community Health Care

Greater Lakes Mental Healthcare

Greater Lakes provides mental health and Substance Use Disorder treatment for Pierce County adults, children and families with Medicaid coverage. Locations providing behavioral health services can be found here. For outpatient clinics, call 253-581-7020 for an appointment or walk-in hours.

MultiCare

This network operates differently than others when it comes to mental health care. They offer a phone line and a walk-in clinic that are used to assess your needs and direct you to a healthcare professional. You can call them at 888-445-8120, Monday through Friday between 8am and 4:30pm. The walk-in clinic is located at 325 East Pioneer Avenue, Puyallup, WA 98372. TIp: When calling or visiting the clinic, make sure to have the following on you:

They have behavioral health clinics in Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Puyallup and Tacoma (11th St, 19th St, and Cushman), as well as an addiction Treatment Center. Sea Mar accepts most insurance plans, including Medicaid, and will provide services regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. When insurance is not available, Sea Mar offers a sliding fee scale discount based on household size and income.

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health

Virginia Mason has locations throughout Western Washington focused on providing more intensive mental and behavioral care, such as for recovering from addiction. Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and MultiCare Health System came together to jointly build and operate an inpatient facility located in Tacoma on the MultiCare Allenmore Hospital campus. Sea Mar Community Health Services

Sea Mar offers comprehensive health services in Western Washington. They offer Maternity Support Services (MSS) at their clinics in Puyallup, Tacoma, Tillicum and University Place. MSS is covered under Washington Apple Health (Medicaid). All clients who are eligible for Medicaid and have a Provider One Service Card qualify for MSS services. Sea Mar also offers a Women, Infants, Children (WIC) Nutrition Program at the Tacoma, Tillicum and University Place clinics. WIC is a supplemental food and nutrition/breastfeeding education program that helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well, learn about nutrition and breastfeeding and stay healthy.

Virginia Mason has locations throughout Western Washington focused on providing OB GYN and women’s health services. Franciscan Women’s Health Associates in Puyallup specializes in gynecology, obstetrics and midwifery.
